What We Do
Interfaith Work As religious communities we come together in a commitment to building a peaceful society in which faith is a vital impetus to constructive development. In our increasingly complex society, we are acutely aware of the pluralist nature of religious belief and practice. We, therefore, commit ourselves to work together to foster respect within and between communities of faith and with the greater community of Rhode Island. In those areas in which we are united, we pledge to work together for the common good, and especially on behalf of those who are disenfranchised from power. When we are divided, we pledge to each other mutual respect, patient listening and genuine openness to learn. We know the importance of faith in shaping individual and corporate life, and therefore commit ourselves to learn of the faith communities of each other with and attitude of expectation which values, rather than deplores, our differences. The Rhode Island State Council of Churches convenes regular meetings of the state’s interfaith leaders. This group works to promote understanding and dialog among all of the state’s religious groups and has organized interfaith services for the community in times of disaster or as a witness to peace and justice |
