As faith leaders, we stand for justice and fairness and in protecting the dignity and rights of all people. We work to bring people together across race, religion, and geography, and we know that our democracy is strong when all voices are heard.
In Rhode Island, we are especially concerned about the inaction of our elected officials to pass the RI Voting Rights Act, especially in light of the collapse of voting protections at the federal level.
Passage of statewide voting protections is essential in the fight to defend our democracy. Among other things, the RI Voting Rights Act would:
prevent the removal from voter rolls of folks who have changed their last name
allow for a private right of action (individuals denied their legal right to vote would have recourse to challenge that denial and would have costs covered by the state)
Prevent language discrimination
Prevent gerrymandering at the state level
Join us at 10:00 am on Tuesday, July 7th on the steps of the State House (Smith Street Side) as we call on our elected officials to prioritize voting rights in RI and beyond. Stand with us as we stand for democracy and for the rights of all citizens to participate.
