Mathewson Street Church
Congregation of the Year Award
At Mathewson Street United Methodist Church, the community extends far beyond the members of its congregation. Mathewson Street is a congregation deeply committed to community engagement and radical hospitality that offers a safe and welcome space for our LGBTQ+ siblings, people experiencing mental health illnesses, and homelessness.
In 2024, Mathewson Street served over 40,000 meals and distributed more than 10,000 essential items such as clothing, toiletries, and blankets. They provided over 225 free bus passes to individuals on SSI or SSDI. Over 140 unique individuals received emergency housing support through hotel placements or rental assistance, and 215 individuals received ongoing case management.
For the congregation at Mathewson Street, the most important impact they measure are the lives transformed by their ministry. They are addressing problems of isolation, stigma, and hopelessness by appreciating, valuing, and seeing the potential of the very people they serve.
